A football and baseball star at Mississippi Southern, Pepper was a sixth-round draft pick of the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers in 1954 but chose to sign a $35,000 bonus contract with the Pirates. Forced by the bonus rule of the time to spend two years on the big league roster before he could be farmed out, he saw little action and never fulfilled expectations.
