When Unglaub was traded from the Yankees to the Red Sox for Patsy Dougherty during the 1904 season, the one-sided swap was perceived by many as part of an AL plot to create stiffer competition for the NL Giants in New York. Unglaub finally became a regular in the year he was the playing manager of the Red Sox for 29 games and hit .254 with career highs of 13 triples, 62 RBI, and 49 RBI.
