Beattie was a college basketball star at Dartmouth. He pitched brilliantly for the Yankees in the 1978 LCS and World Series, but the next season was on owner George Steinbrenner’s shuttle to Triple-A, before being traded to Seattle as part of the deal for Ruppert Jones. In seven seasons with the Mariners, Beattie was a workhorse starter, setting club records (subsequently broken) for walks, runs, and earned runs allowed in a season. In 1982, Beattie set a club record for a starter by pitching 19 consecutive scoreless innings. On September 27, 1983, Beattie threw the first one-hitter in Mariners history, the only baserunner being the Royals’ U.L. Washington, who singled in the third inning. He also surrendered Carl Yastrezemski’s 3,000th hit.
