Had pitching been his only talent, the 6’4″ 200-lb Brosnan would be recalled as a consistent reliever whose ERA for eight consecutive years never topped 3.79. Used exclusively in relief for the pennant-winning 1961 Reds, he compiled a 10-4 record and a 3.04 ERA in 53 appearances. But the spectacled and scholarly “Professor” became best known as the author of the autobiographical baseball book classics The Long Season and Pennant Race.
