Tom Butters

The Ohio Wesleyan grad’s modest career as a reliever ended when he sustained a neck injury in an auto accident. But when he moved on to Duke University, Butters became a smashing success. He served as baseball coach from 1968-70 and — The Sporting News labeled him the world champion of fundraisers. During his tenure as Athletics Director (1977-98), Butters built the Blue Devils into a national powerhouse, hiring champion basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and upgrading many other programs.
