Loftus’s career as a ML manager was far longer than his ML playing career. He often had a part ownership in the clubs he managed. He did not believe in changing pitchers during a game, and in 1890 he worked to change the rule prohibiting a manager from being a third base coach. For a time he was president of the Three-I League.
