Griggs was a football star at Kansas University and the University of Pittsburgh. In his baseball career, he was a steady hitter who played on 15 clubs in ten leagues throughout a 27-year pro career. In his best ML performance, he hit .364 in 28 games with Detroit in 1918. He was also a respected minor league manager.
