A former high school English teacher in Kansas, Bill James delved into the study of baseball statistics, publishing a series of “baseball abstracts” each season from 1977 through 1988 and The Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract in 1985. One of the primary developers of modern sabermetrics, he is largely responsible for the newfound popularity of statistical analyses of baseball questions. His writing is accessible and often acerbic. James is also a contributing editor to Inside Sports.
