Bobby Thigpen

After his emergence as Chicago’s bullpen ace in 1987 following the injury problems of Bob James, Thigpen carried on an odd salary battle with the White Sox front office in the off-season. He stated his case in awkward doggerel verse, with the team responding in like fashion; the exchange was even reprinted in The Wall Street Journal. He proved his worth more convincingly in 1988 with 34 saves.
