An American born of Japanese parents, Wakabayishi attended college in Japan and was among the players recruited when the first Japanese professional league formed in 1936. His American catcher, Bucky Harris (who won the 1937 HR title with only six), was expelled from Japan for his nationality after the 1939 season, but Wakabayishi remained to win 240 games.
