Phillips began as an outfielder, but didn’t hit well enough to play regularly. In 1957 he moved to third base for the White Sox and by hard work made himself into a competent infielder. He had his best season (.264, 18 HR, 72 RBI) in 1961 with Cleveland, leading all AL third basemen in homers.
