Grantland Rice called Van Loan “sports’ greatest fiction writer.” A newspaperman from 1903 to 1910, he then wrote short stories for numerous magazines. Many were later published in four collections: The Lucky Seventh, Inside the Ropes, Fore, and Score by Innings.
