Charlie Deal

When regular Braves third baseman “Red” Smith broke his leg in one of the last regular-season games in 1914, Deal took over at third and helped Boston sweep the WS in four games. His $2,400 season salary was nearly matched by his $2,200 Series share. When the Braves denied him a $500 raise the next year, he jumped to the Federal League for $4,500 and a $3,000 bonus. From 1917 to 1921 he was the Cubs’ regular third baseman.
