The lefthanded-hitting Hoffman was considered a top A’s prospect in 1904 when a pitch from Boston southpaw Jesse Tannehill hit him in the eye. He never recovered enough vision to stand in against lefthanded pitching. He was the American League‘s 1905 stolen-base champ, with 46, and stole 185 bases in his career.
