Not many pitchers have enjoyed the start that Capilla had breaking into professional ball. He struck out the first 21 batters he faced as a professional hurler while at Great Falls (Pioneer League). The Hawaiian was originally signed by San Francisco as an outfielder. The Cardinals drafted him from the Giants in 1973. At times he showed signs of being a standout, but he had control problems during his career.
