Ed Bang

After working for several newspapers in Ohio, Bang succeeded Grantland Rice as sports editor of the Cleveland News in 1907 and remained there for 53 years until the newspaper closed. In 1942, he estimated he ‘d written more than 50 million words for the News. Known for his distinctive foghorn voice and for answering every letter or call, whether from an important sports figure or only a fan, Bang was among those who once carried card No. 1 of the BBWAA and was a regular contributor to The Sporting News.
