Ed Doheny

A Boston writer earned $100 in 1895 for tipping off Giants owner Andrew Freedman about Doheny, who was pitching for St. Albans, VT (Northern League). In seven seasons, Doheny was never a winner for New York, as the club only once finished higher than seventh. Traded to the Pirates in midseason 1901, he overcame his control problems and went 16-4 for the 1902 pennant winners; his .800 winning percentage was the second-best in the NL. The Pirates repeated in 1903, and his 16-8, .667 mark was the fifth-best NL winning percentage.
