Byrd, who wasn’t afraid to throw a brushback pitch, earned AL rookie honors with 15 victories in 1952, when he and A’s southpaw Bobby Shantz formed the league’s winningest righty-lefty tandem (39). He lost a league-high 20 his sophomore year, and never again won more than 11.
