Martin developed his back muscles swinging a sledge in Oklahoma’s oil fields. The switch-hitter scored 102 runs as a Phillies rookie in 1937. He batted a career-high .302 for the 1944 Yankees. He was a Mets scout from their inception in 1961 until 1979.
