Virtually a one-man staff, Gondo won 35 games and worked 429 innings as rookie for the Chunichi Dragons. But he was finished at age 24, the victim of a torn rotator cuff. Elder brother Masatochi pitched nearly 15 seasons for the Hanshin Tigers, but never with spectacular success.
