Sweeney led AL first basemen in fielding percentage and total chances for the Red Sox in 1931, and recorded 21 putouts in one game June 24, but his .295 average with one home run wasn’t enough to keep his job. He was replaced the next year by Dale Alexander, who hit .367 to lead the AL.
