Devlin was the workhorse of the NL in its first two seasons, pitching nearly all of Louisville’s games and logging 1,181 innings. Late in 1877, he was implicated with three teammates in throwing games that denied the Colonels what had seemed a sure pennant. He was expelled from baseball and died nearly destitute six years later.
