Jim Mason

Mason had the lowest batting average in the 1970’s of any player with at least 1,500 at-bats. He hit below .200 in six of his eight seasons (not counting his nine at-bats in 1971) with a career high of .250 in 1974, his only year as a regular. That August 8, he tied a major league record with four doubles in a game. In the 1976 World Series for the Yankees he earned a unique distinction. After he came in for defense in Game Three, he hit a solo homer in the seventh inning in his only WS at-bat, the only man in history to do so. He was the Blue Jays’ starting shortstop in their first game.
