A stylish and graceful outfielder for the old Cleveland Spiders, McAleer came out of retirement to help form the new American League‘s St. Louis franchise. He successfully raided the Cardinals for players such as Hall of Famers Jesse Burkett and Bobby Wallace and managed the Browns for eight years. He was part owner of the Red Sox in 1912-13.
