Joe Doyle

When his team was at bat on hot days, Doyle would sometimes lie down on the tarpaulin and nap, but he earned his nickname by being one of the slowest workers ever to take the mound. In addition to stalling, he relied on a “drop” (a sinker), a “raise ball,” and a spitter. Although he threw shutouts in his first two ML starts, 11 wins in 1907 was his career high.
