A 6’4″ University of Mississippi basketball All-American, Gibbon looked like the emerging star of Pittsburgh’s staff in 1961 (13-10, 3.32). After an injury-plagued 1962, he bounced back in 1964 to go 10-7. He went to the Giants in a 1965 trade for Matty Alou, who then won the 1966 batting title. By 1968 Gibbon was solely a reliever.
