Schultz was a right-handed hitter who was devastated by right-handed pitching and played parts of 11 major league seasons without having a regular job. He managed in the minors and coached for the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates. As a Pittsburgh scout, he signed his own son, Joe Schultz Jr.
