Bassler was an excellent catcher and a steady .300 hitter with little power for the Tigers, finishing sixth, seventh, and fifth in AL MVP voting, 1922-24. He enjoyed the California lifestyle so much he cut short his ML career and spent many years playing and managing in the Pacific Coast League.
