The Floridian had his first real shot with the Indians in 1930, and was hitting .312 on July 19 when he fractured a wrist, ending his season. He bounced back to bat .300 in 1931, and in an 18-inning game on July 10, 1932, set a single-game ML record with nine hits. The day before, he had had two hits, giving him 11, an AL record for most hits in two consecutive games.
