Puerto Rico’s Luis Olmo got his chance with Brooklyn during the WWII talent shortage, and proved to be a solid ballplayer, batting .313 with a league-high 13 triples in 1945. Lured to the Mexican League in 1946 by the promise of higher salaries, he was among those suspended by Commissioner Chandler for jumping the major leagues. Reinstated in 1949, he returned to the Dodgers for the stretch drive, and batted .305 to help win the pennant.
