Haefner was one of the Senators’ four wartime knuckleballers, whose butterfly pitches brought out the best in Hall of Fame catcher Rick Ferrell and 1943 All-Star catcher Jake Early. In 1945, the chunky lefthander won 16, his ML high, but had losing records from 1947 on.
