Nelson Mathews

Called “another Earle Combs” by Charlie Grimm for the way he got a jump on the ball, Mathews signed with the Cubs for a $25,000 bonus. Traded to the A’s after trials in 1960-63, he was their centerfielder only for 1964, striking out an AL-high 143 times and leading AL outfielders in putouts and errors.
