Nestor Chylak

Chylak, who “ate and lived umpiring,” according to Dave Phillips, was an all-star among his peers. A fine teacher and technician, he set the standard for AL umps during much of his career. On June 14, 1974, unruly fans stormed the Cleveland field during the ninth inning of “Beer Night,” when brew was available for 10 cents a cup. The game was tied 5-5 at the time, After several injuries, including a cut wrist for Chylak, peace was temporarily restored. But when another fan fight broke out near the pitcher’s mound, Chylak declared visiting Texas the winner by forfeit.
