Shannon was a college correspondent for the Boston Globe while attending Harvard. When the Globe’s sports editor died, Shannon was named to replace him and held that position for 32 years. A frequent contributor to magazines, he was a charter member of the BBWAA and ultimately carried card No. 2, indicating he was second in seniority among all members. He was the 66th president of the BBWAA at his death.
