Strictly a starter in the minors, Smith possessed an above-average fastball but was never able to gain any consistency at the major-league level. He bounced between the rotation and the bullpen throughout his career, unable to find his niche. His best season was in 1989 with the Minnesota Twins, when he went 10-6 with a 3.92 ERA in 172 1/3 innings.
