Sammy Hale

As a Tiger rookie in 1920, Hale led the AL with 17 pinch hits in 52 at-bats, but he failed to stick, and the A’s bought him from Portland for $75,000 in 1923. At Philadelphia, he played third base whenever Jimmy Dykes was playing another position. Hale was a smart fielder reputed to have the smallest hands in the game.
