Although Coffman had more self-confidence than stuff, in the cocky Alabaman’s ML debut, he beat Lefty Grove 4-2. He was 7-5 as a Tiger rookie in 1937, but three straight seasons with ERAs over 6.00 followed. His brother, Dick, pitched 15 years in the majors.
