When Chandler retired after the 1947 season, he possessed the highest winning percentage (.717) of any pitcher with 100 or more major league victories. In addition to his 109 regular-season triumphs, Chandler won the 1942 All-Star Game and recorded two victories, including the clincher, for the Yankees in the 1943 World Series. Chandler led AL pitchers in wins (20), winning percentage (.883), ERA (1.64), complete games (20), and shutouts (five) in 1943, capturing the MVP award. After time out for military service, he went 20-8 in 1946 and led the league in ERA (2.46) for a second time in 1947. Chandler, who played baseball and football for the University of Georgia, threw 26 shutouts during his ML career.
