An off-the-field fashion plate, Palermo earned a reputation as one of the top ball-and-strike umpires in the majors. His disdain for the ball-and-strike indicator used by most umpires once resulted in Minnesota’s Jose Morales doubling with a count of “four balls and two strikes.”
