Pete Rose was the last man to manage and also play, doing so for Cincinnati from August 16, 1984, through the end of the 1986 season, when he retired as a player. Don Kessinger was the last player/manager in the American League, guiding the 1979 White Sox until August 2nd, when he resigned.
