What baseball teams have had nicknames?

The Cincinnati Reds of the 1970s are an example of a team that garnered a nickname. The Reds were called the “Big Red Machine” for much of that decade. The Yankees have been called the “Bronx Bombers” since moving into Yankee Stadium in the Bronx in the 1920s. Another team of that era, the St. Louis Cardinals, earned the nickname “Gashouse Gang.”

Some other team nicknames: the 1970s Los Angeles Dodgers – “Big Blue Wrecking Crew,” the 1970s Oakland A’s – “Mustache Gang” or “Fightin’ A’s.” The 1950 NL pennant-winning Phillies were called the “Whiz Kids.” The 1982 Milwaukee Brewers were known by many as “Harvey’s Wallbangers.” The Dodgers received the nickname Bums in the 1940s – which was actually an affectionate term their fans used.
