April 4Cubs OF Tuffy Rhodes becomes 1st NL player to hit 3 HRs on opening day when he connects off Doc Gooden at Wrigley Field‚ but the Mets beat the Cubs 12-8‚ with Gooden getting the win over Mike Morgan. Tuffy’s three HRs are consecutive and he adds a single.

Jacobs Field in Cleveland opens with the Indians defeating the Mariners‚ 4-3‚ in front of 41‚259 fans. Seattle OF Eric Anthony hits the stadium’s first HR‚ while Eric Plunk notches the first victory in relief.
April 8Braves P Kent Mercker no-hits the Dodgers‚ 6-0‚ fanning 10 in the process. It his first complete game in the majors. Chan Ho Park comes on to pitch in the 9th for the Dodgers‚ becoming the first Korean player to appear in a major league game.

Darryl Strawberry enters the Betty Ford Clinic in Rancho Mirage‚ California‚ for 18 days of treatment for substance abuse.

Oakland defeats Minnesota‚ 15-5‚ as Geronimo Berroa gets 5 hits‚ and drives home 5 runs‚ for the A’s.
April 11At the regular season opening of The Ballpark at Arlington‚ a fan posing for pictures falls from the railing of the right field home run porch. Hollye Minter falls some 35 feet and breaks her right arm‚ ribs‚ and several bones in her neck. The Brewers go on to defeat the Rangers‚ 4-3.
April 12Boston 3B Scott Cooper hits for the cycle while going 5-for-6 in the Red Sox- 22-11 victory over KC. It is the most runs ever scored in a game against the Royals.
April 13Montreal P Pedro Martinez’s bid for a perfect game‚ in only his 5th major league start‚ goes down the tubes as he hits Reds OF Reggie Sanders on an 0-2 count with 1 out in the 8th inning. Sanders apparently thinks that Martinez did it deliberately and charges the mound‚ setting off a bench-clearing brawl. When order is restored‚ Martinez loses his no-hitter when Brian Dorsett singles to lead off the 9th. He does not figure in the decision‚ as the Reds rally to tie. Montreal wins‚ 3-2‚ with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Indians P Derek Lilliquist is credited with Cleveland’s 6-5 win without retiring a batter. With 2 outs in 9th of a 5-5 tie‚ the runner on 1B‚ Rex Hudler‚ is thrown out trying to steal. The Indians go on to score in the 10th to win the game.
April 15The Angels rally to score 7 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning against Toronto to tie the game at 13-13. The Blue Jays had scored 5 runs in the top half of the inning to take a 10-3 lead. California pushes across the winning run in the 10th to come out on top with a 14-13 victory.

Beloit Brewers P Kelly Wunsch strikes out 5 batters in the 3rd inning of Beloit’s Class A Midwest League game against the Springfield Sultans. Two of the 5 reach base after striking out on pitches that get away from the catcher. Wunsch loses‚ but his mitt ends up in Cooperstown.
April 18In a 7-1 win over the visiting Cardinals‚ Braves hitters Ryan Klesko‚ Fred McGriff‚ and David Justice hit back-to-back-to-back homers‚ all off Rick Sutcliffe.

Tim Raines rocks three homers and scores 5 runs to lead the White Sox to a 12-1 win over the Red Sox. Frank Thomas also homers for the Pale Hose.
April 19The Red Sox defeat the Athletics‚ 13-5‚ as Mo Vaughn and Tim Naehring twice hit back-to-back HRs. The pair connect off Bob Welch in the 2nd inning and off Carlos Reyes in the 6th.

Expo OF Larry Walker throws out Giants P John Burkett at 1B on a ground ball into RF. Montreal goes on to defeat San Francisco‚ 4-3.
April 21Cleveland 1B Eddie Murray smacks HRs from both sides of the plate in the Indians’ 10-6 win over the Twins. It is the 11th time that he has performed the feat‚ breaking the record previously held by Mickey Mantle.
April 23Padres’ OF Tony Gwynn gets 5 hits‚ including a double and HR‚ in San Diego’s 8-2 win over Philadelphia.
April 24Julio Franco and Robin Ventura twice hit back-to-back HRs in Chicago’s 7-6 loss to Detroit. It is the 17th time it has happened in major league history‚ and the 2nd time this week.
April 25Padres’ P Scott Sanders and OF Derek Bell are arrested in New York on charges of soliciting undercover policewomen posing as prostitutes‚ prior to San Diego’s game against the Mets. The Padres go on to win the game‚ 6-3‚ as Sanders picks up his first career save. Charges against Sanders and Bell will be dismissed in October for lack of evidence.
April 26Baltimore OF Brady Anderson gets 4 extra-base hits in his first 4 trips to the plate in the Orioles’ 10-4 win over Oakland. Anderson’s 2 doubles and 2 HRs all come while leading off an inning. Palmeiro and Hoiles both homer to back Arthur Rhoades.
April 27Minnesota P Scott Erickson no-hits the Brewers‚ 6-0. It is the first no-hitter in the history of the Metrodome. Erickson strikes out 5 while walking 4 in his gem‚ the first Minnesota no-hitter in 27 years.

Toronto OF Joe Carter sets an new major league record by driving home his 30th run of April with a 1st-inning single in the Blue Jays’ 11-3 loss to Texas. Carter will finish the month with 31.
April 29Montreal P Kirk Reuter defeats SD by a score of 3-1. In doing so‚ he becomes the first major league pitcher since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981 to begin his career by winning his first 10 decisions. The all-time record is 12‚ held by former Giants hurler‚ Hooks Wiltse‚ who did so in 1904‚ and tied by Butch Metzger (1974-76).

Colorado 1B Andres Galarraga sets a new NL record by driving in his 30th run of the month in the Rockies’ 6-5 victory over Chicago. The previous league mark of 29 was held by Dale Murphy and Ron Cey.
April 30The Orioles and Mike Mussina top Seattle and Randy Johnson‚ 6-4. The O’s lose rookie Jeffrey Hammonds when he suffers a concussion running into catcher Bill Hasleman while trying to score on a sac fly. Jack Voight takes over for Hammonds and is 3-for-5 with a homer.

May 2For the first time ever‚ the Cubs do not don their traditional white uniforms for their game with Cincinnati at Wrigley Field. The change doesn’t help‚ however‚ as Chicago records its 11th straight home loss‚ losing 9-0 to John Smiley while wearing blue jerseys. Smiley allows 2 hits.
May 3Phillies P Andy Carter makes his major league debut in Philadelphia’s 8-3 loss to San Diego. Carter faces only 3 batters in relief of Shawn Boskie‚ hits 2 of them‚ and is ejected from the game by home plate umpire Jim Quick.

At Denver‚ Ray Lankford leads off for St. Louis with his 2nd leadoff homer in two games‚ but that is the Cards scoring. Colorado then plates 10 runs to win‚ 10-1.

Florida OF Chuck Carr record the first 5-hit game in Marlins history‚ doing so in the team’s 6-3 win over the Braves. Carr’s 5 singles helps Florida move 2 games over .500 for the first time in their 2-year history.
May 4Detroit 2B Lou Whitaker drives in 7 runs in the Tigers’ 14-7 win over the Rangers. He strokes a 3-run HR in the 3rd inning‚ and a grand slam in the 8th.

The Cubs end their record home-losing streak of 12 games by beating the Reds‚ 5-2. Steve Trachsel is the winner‚ with help from HRs by Sosa and Eddie Zambrano and a “good luck” goat in attendance.
May 5Tampa Yankees DH Edwin Salcedo hits an apparent 430-foot HR in a game against the Brevard County Manatees‚ but does not even receive credit for a single. Salcedo misses first base while rounding the bases‚ and is called out on appeal. The Manatees defeat the Yankees‚ 5-3.
May 6Anthony Young snaps his two-year win drought as a starter as the Cubs pummel the Pirates with 9 extra base hits to win‚ 10-1. Young‚ who set a ML record with 27 straight losses‚ will win his next 2 starts.
May 8Jose Tartabull‚ Mike Stanley‚ and Gerald Williams hit back-to-back-to-back HRs for the Yankees in the 6th inning of NY’s 8-4 win over Boston.

Pittsburgh OF Andy Van Slyke goes 8-for-9 in the Pirates’ 9-2 and 9-3 doubleheader sweep of the Cubs. Van Slyke homers and doubles in the first game‚ while driving in 4 runs.

In their first official game against an all-men’s team‚ the Colorado Silver Bullets are defeated by the Northern League All-Stars‚ 19-0. The Bullets are outhit‚ 21-2‚ and commit 6 errors in the field.
May 9Central Valley (California League) SS Neifi Perez pulls an unassisted triple play on a line drive.
May 10The Braves score 7 runs in the bottom of the 9th to come back from an 8-1 deficit to tie the Phillies. Atlanta goes on to win the game‚ 9-8 in 15 innings.
May 12The Pirates lose to the Phillies‚ 6-4. In the process‚ they strand 17 runners on base‚ just 1 shy of the NL record for a 9-inning game.
May 13OF Tim Salmon leads the Angels to an 11-1 win over the Mariners with 5 hits‚ including 2 HRs. Salmon drive home 5 runs while scoring 4 himself. The 5 safeties give him 13 hits in his last 15 at bats‚ tying the AL mark for most hits in 3 games set by Joe Cronin in 1933 and tied by Walt Dropo in 1952.
May 14In only his 2nd major league appearance‚ Cleveland P Paul Shuey fans 4 batters in the 9th inning of the Tribe’s 9-3 win over Detroit. He becomes only the 10th pitcher in AL history‚ and the first rookie‚ to fan 4 in an inning.
May 15Six Florida Marlins pitchers combine to shut out the Cubs‚ 3-0. Starter Chris Hammond gets credit for the victory.
May 17Six St. Louis Cardinals pitchers combine to shut out the Pirates on 2 hits‚ 2-0. It is only the 3rd time in NL history‚ and the 2nd time in 3 days‚ that 6 hurlers have combined to blank another team. Tom Urbani gets the win‚ allowing one hit in 7 1/3 innings.

Pitcher Frank Viola undergoes surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left elbow and will be out for the year.

Marcel Lachemann is named manager of the Angels‚ replacing Buck Rodgers.
May 18The Cincinnati Enquirer quotes Marge Schott as saying she doesn’t want her Reds players to wear earrings‚ because “only fruits wear earrings.” She will later clarify her statement saying she was “not prejudice against any group‚ regardless of lifestyle preferences.” Dodger P Roger McDowell buys earrings for the whole team and they will wear them in the clubhouse in Cincinnati: LaSorda doesn’t allow them to wear them on the field.

The Dodgers beat the Rockies‚ 8-2‚ behind Orel Hirshiser’s 8 srong innings. Batting for Hirshiser‚ Garey Ingram hits a pinch homer on his first ML at bat. He’ll have just 3 career HRs.

Japanese P Hiromi Makihara of the Yomiuri Giants pitches a perfect game‚ 6-0 win over the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. It is the 15th perfect game in Japanese baseball history.
May 20Minnesota OF Kirby Puckett‘s 7 RBIs leads the Twins to a 21-2 victory over the Red Sox. Minnesota scores 11 times in the 5th inning to put the game away. Rookie OF Andy Tomberlin hurls the last 2 innings for the Sox‚ and allows just 1 hit and no runs.

The Mariners fall just short of matching the Twins by defeating the Rangers by a score of 19-2. Five Mariners hit HRs as Seattle knocks out 21 hits in setting a team record for runs scored.
May 22Kansas City P David Cone hurls a 1-hit‚ 4-0 shutout over the Angels. Chili Davis‘ opposite-field single in the 5th inning is California’s only safety.
May 24At home‚ the Cardinals set a new ML record for futility by stranding 16 base runners in a shutout‚ a 4-0 loss to the Phils. The Cards collect 9 hits and 8 walks to strand runners in every inning but the first. At the end of the 8 innings the game is scoreless‚ but new Cards reliever Mike Perez gives up 2 hits and a walk‚ then a 3-run homer to Pete Incaviglia. The old record of 15 baserunners in a shutout had been done 4 times‚ the last on May 12‚ 1975. The Mariners in 1998 will match the Cards futility and set the AL record.
May 25Royals’ P Kevin Appier strikes out 13 Rangers in only 5 2/3 innings in KC’s 8-3 victory over Texas. According to records traced back to 1986‚ no other pitcher in that time had pitched less than 6 innings in a game and had that many strikeouts. Appier is removed from the contest since he had thrown 108 pitches‚ and had had to sit through a 49-minute rain delay.

May 27The Silver Bullets defeat the Richfield Rockets‚ 7-2‚ before a crowd of 3‚954‚ in what is believed to be the first victory by a women’s pro team over a men’s squad. Lee Anne Ketcham fans 14 for the Silver Bullets.
May 29The Braves trade OF Deion Sanders to the Reds in exchange for OF Roberto Kelly and minor league P Roger Etheridge.
May 31KC OF Brian McRae strokes 5 hits in the Royals’ 9-7 win over Boston.

The Padres score 13 runs in the 2nd inning of their 15-5 victory over the Pirates.

The Brewers Sal Bando‚ a former ASU third baseman‚ picks another ASU 3rd sacker‚ Antone Williamson‚ with Milwaukee’s the 4th pick overall. The Brewers do find a good 5th round pick in Steve Woodard. The Marlins use the 5th overall on Josh Booty‚ rated the top high school QB in the nation. Booty will sign with the Fish for $1.6 million‚ hit .198 in 4 years in the minors‚ have a cup of coffee with the Marlins‚ and return to college football. The Dodgers pick Paul Konerko with the 13th overall pick‚ while Carlton Loewer is taken by the Phils with the 23rd pick. The Royals take Jose Rosado on the 12th round. Boston ends up with the best draft‚ taking Nomar Garciaparra (1st round‚ 12th pick)‚ Brian Rose (3rd round)‚ Brian Barkley (5th)‚ Damien Sapp (10th)‚ Donie Sadler (11th)‚ and Carl Pavano (18th). The Twins pick Corey Koskie on the 26th round. On a draft-and-follow‚ the Cubs take Kyle Farnsworth on the 47th round.
June 4Minnesota OF Pedro Munoz drives in 7 runs to lead the Twins to a 21-7 win over Detroit. Minnesota becomes the 1st team since the 1950 Red Sox to score more than 20 runs in a game 2 times in the same season. They had previously beaten Boston‚ 21-2‚ on May 20.
June 5OF Alex Ochoa and 1B Brent Miller‚ of the Class AA Bowie Baysox‚ each homer twice in the 4th inning of Bowie’s 28-10 win over the Harrisburg Senators. It is only the 3rd time in minor league history that 2 players from the same team have homered in the same inning. A total of 11 HRs are hit in the game‚ including 7 by the Baysox.

The International Baseball Association votes down a proposal to allow open competition in IBA events such as the world championships and the Olympics.
June 7Toronto defeats Chicago‚ 9-5‚ stopping Wilson Alvarez‘s winning streak at 15 games. Bo Jackson drives home all 5 of the White Sox runs. Alvarez falls 2 short of the AL record held jointly by Johnny Allen and Dave McNally.
June 8AL owners elect Gene Budig as league president‚ replacing Bobby Brown.
June 11Detroit defeats California by a score of 11-5 as OF Kirk Gibson drives home 7 of the runs on a pair of homers.
June 13Texas trounces Seattle‚ 17-9‚ as DH Jose Canseco drives home 8 runs with 5 hits. Canseco counts 3 HRs among his safeties.

Colorado beats Atlanta‚ 7-2‚ marking the Rockies first victory ever over the Braves after 16 consecutive defeats. Former Atlanta pitcher Marvin Freeman gets the win.

Montreal P Jeff Fassero loses a no-hitter with 2 outs in the 9th inning as Pittsburgh 2B Carlos Garcia singles. SS Jay Bell follows with a HR‚ but the Expos hold on for a 10-2 victory.

Cubs 2B Ryne Sandberg announces his retirement‚ effective immediately.
June 14Baseball owners make a salary cap proposal‚ asking players to split revenue 50-50. Salary arbitration would be eliminated‚ and free agency for players reached after 4 years in the majors instead of 6. The players will reject the proposal on June 18th.
June 16Trailing 6-4 going into the bottom of the 9th‚ the Indians rally to tie the game‚ then win it 7-6 when Albert Belle smacks an RBI-double to left center. The Sox elected to pitch to Belle with first base open. The win is Cleveland’s 15th consecutive home victory.

The Pirates defeat the Cardinals‚ 7-5 in 10 innings‚ in a game which sees St. Louis turn an NL-record-tying 7 double plays.

The Red Sox trade C Dave Valle to the Brewers in exchange for OF Tom Brunansky.
June 17Seattle defeats KC‚ 5-1‚ as Ken Griffey Jr. socks his 30th HR of the season. In doing so‚ he joins Babe Ruth as the only players to have hit 30 homers before June 30. Ruth did so in both 1928 and 1930.

Atlanta defeats Cincinnati‚ 6-5‚ to give Braves’ manager Bobby Cox his 1‚000th career victory.
June 19The Reds score 7 runs in the first inning and go on to defeat Atlanta‚ 12-4‚ using a 20-hit attack for the second day in a row. Hal Morris‚ Kevin Mitchell‚ Jeff Branson‚ and Eddie Taubensee all homer off Braves’ starter John Smoltz in the frame‚ as the Atlanta hurler becomes the 14th pitcher in major league history to surrender 4 round-trippers in a single inning. He also allows 20 total bases‚ a 20th century NL record. Atlanta adds a homer to match the 2-team homerun mark for one inning.

Detroit beats Toronto by a score of 3-1. Mickey Tettleton homers for the Tigers‚ marking the 25th consecutive game in which a Detroit player had hit a round-tripper. That ties the major league record held by the 1941 Yankees. Cleveland’s Charles Nagy and Eric Plunk will stop the streak tomorrow.

The Giants sign OF Darryl Strawberry‚ recently released from a drug rehabilitation program in California‚ and then released by the Dodgers.
June 20Umpires Dana DeMuth‚ Tom Hallion‚ Paul Runge‚ and Angel Hernandez work the Atlanta-NY game wearing shorts and Braves T-shirts and caps. The umps regular equipment was lost in transit. The Braves win the game‚ 7-3.
June 21The Red Sox score 10 times in the top of the first inning as they go on to defeat the Blue Jays‚ 13-1.
June 22OF Ken Griffey Jr. leads the Mariners to a 12-3 win over the Angels by stroking his 31st HR of the season. In doing so‚ Griffey breaks Babe Ruth‘s record for most HRs before the end of June‚ set by the Babe in 1926 and 1930.

The Mets Pete Smith gives up homers to the first two Atlanta batters‚ Roberto Kelly and Jeff Blauser‚ then settles dwon as the Mets win‚ 5-2‚ beating Greg Maddux. John Franco picks up his 253rd save‚ the most by a left hander.

After two straight losses‚ White Sox pitcher Wilson Alvarez beats Texas‚ 4-0. Alvarez had set a club record with 15 straight wins earlier.
June 23Oakland P Bobby Witt narrowly misses hurling a perfect game‚ defeating KC on a 4-0‚ 1-hitter. Umpire Gary Cederstrom calls Greg Gagne safe on a close play at 1st in the 6th inning‚ for the Royals only hit‚ but TV replays show that Gagne was out. The play went 1B Troy Neel to Witt covering. Witt fans 14 and does not walk a batter in his masterpiece.

The Reds defeat the Giants‚ 7-5‚ in a contest that sees SF P Pat Gomez throw 3 consecutive wild pitches in the 8th inning. Gomez’s next pitch‚ like the 3 previous ones‚ bounces in the dirt‚ but C Kirt Manwaring is able to block it‚ preventing Gomez from becoming just the 3rd pitcher ever to throw 4 wild pitches in an inning.

The Senate Judiciary Committee fails to approve antitrust legislation by a vote of 10-7. According to Donald Fehr‚ executive director of the Major League Players Association‚ the action leaves the players with little choice but to strike.
