In 1965 sinkerballer Bob Locker joined knuckleballers Hoyt Wilhelm and Eddie Fisher in the White Sox bullpen. Locker led the American League with 77 appearances and saved 20 games in 1967. When asked about his success, the geology major explained that he derived his powers from consuming honey – nature’s essence. Locker was traded to the Pilots in 1969 and sold to Oakland a year later. He went 7-2 in 1971, and 6-1 with 10 saves for the 1972 World Champion A’s. When Rollie Fingers established himself as Oakland’s ace reliever, Locker was traded to the Cubs, for whom he won 10 and saved 18 in 1973. He retired with 95 career saves.
