January 8The BBWAA in TSN poll names the 1940 All Star team: Hank Greenberg‚ LF; Joe DiMaggio‚ CF; Ted Williams‚ RF; Frank McCormick‚ 1B; Joe Gordon‚ 2B; Luke Appling‚ SS; Stan Hack‚ 3B; Harry Danning‚ C. The pitchers are Bob Feller‚ Bucky Walters‚ and Paul Derringer.
January 21Bob Feller signs with the Indians for a reported $30‚000.
January 31Paul Waner‚ released by Pittsburgh in December 1940‚ signs with Brooklyn. He’ll play 11 games before moving onto the Braves‚ but he’ll return to Brooklyn in 1943.

February 8The Tigers release OF Earl Averill and sign OF Hoot Evers‚ out of the University of Illinois. Averill will be released by Detroit‚ signed by the Braves‚ then released April 29.
February 14The entire Dodger squad leave New York to train in Havana‚ Cuba for most of the spring. Babe Phelps‚ a reluctant traveler and still unsigned‚ will leave the team in Miami‚ rather than take a boat‚ and return to Maryland.
February 25Days after the start of spring training‚ the Yankees sell Babe Dahlgren‚ the man who took over 1B from Lou Gehrig in 1939‚ to the Braves. The deal is questioned since no replacement seems apparent. McCarthy claims they would have won another pennant had not Babe Dahlgren made a costly error at first late in the season.
February 28The Dodgers and Giants open the spring training schedule with a 4-3 Brooklyn win in Havana. Paul Dean takes the loss.

March 2In Havana‚ the Dodgers complete a 3-game sweep of their rival Giants. During the regular 1940 season the Giants held a 16-6 advantage over Brooklyn.
March 4Grace Comiskey‚ widow of J. Louis Comiskey‚ is elected president of the Chicago White Sox. Her husband died on July 18‚ 1939.
March 5Dodger president Larry MacPhail issues instructions that all Dodger players must live in Brooklyn. MacPhail is also campaigning for visiting teams to stay in Brooklyn rather than Manhattan.
March 7At Havana‚ the Dodgers roll over the Cleveland Indians 15-0. Pee Wee Reese and Joe Medwick use a batting helmet designed by two Johns Hopkins doctors with the help of Larry MacPhail. The two Dodgers‚ victims of HBPs last year‚ pronounce the helmets satisfactory. Brooklyn P Van Lingle Mungo celebrates the win a little too hard and when tomorrow’s game is rained out‚ he continues to party. The result is that manager Durocher sends him a note informing Mungo he’s been reassigned to the Dodgers’ minor league camp in Macon. Mungo will pitch just 2 innings for Brooklyn this year.
March 8Phillies P Hugh Mulcahy becomes the first big leaguer drafted into the Armed Forces for W.W.II. Mulcahy‚ an All Star in 1940 while leading the NL in losses for the 2nd time‚ will pitch less than 100 innings when he returns after the war. More than 100 major leaguers will be drafted within the next two years‚ and two-Elmer Gedeon and Harry O’Neill-will be killed in action.
March 15In Monterrey‚ Mexico‚ 6000 fans watch the Browns top the Boston Bees‚ 6-3. Chet Laabs‚ fighting to win the RF spot‚ hits a 400-fit homer in the 7th.
March 23Joe DiMaggio‚ a hold out and late arrival in spring training‚ plays his first Grapefruit League game.
March 27The Yankees sell P Steve Sundra to the Senators. Sundra‚ 11-1‚ in 1939‚ slipped in 1940 to 4-6.
March 30Giants manager Bill Terry says he turned down a 3-team deal‚ which would have sent Dodgers 2B Pete Coscaret and Cubs holdout Hank Lieber to the Giants. Chicago would get Giant C-OF Harry Danning‚ while Brooklyn would get 2B Billy Herman from the Cubs. Brooklyn will still get Herman‚ but not till May 6.

April 11At the Bee Hive‚ the Red Sox beat the Bees‚ 11-6‚ pinning the loss of wes Ferrell. Sibby Sisti hits a HR.
April 13In the final pre-season tune-up game with Brooklyn‚ the Yankees win their 3rd in a row at Ebbets Field‚ 3-0‚ on Sunday afternoon. The Dodgers had come into the series with an 11-game winning streak‚ including 4 with the Yanks on the way North.

At Fenway‚ the Bees take the 2nd game in a 2-game set against the Red Sox‚ winning 10-3. Babe Dahlgren and Max West homer.
April 14With the only game scheduled in sweltering Washington‚ writers for The Sporting News selecting Cincinnati to repeat in the NL and Cleveland to win the AL. Franklin Roosevelt tosses out the first ball‚ and then the Yankees score single runs in the 1st‚ 4th‚ and 5th innings off Dutch Leonard to win‚ 3-0. Mario Russo allows three hits and drives in a run with a double to win. Phil Rizzuto‚ like Russo a graduate of New York’s Richmond Hills High School‚ is hitless in his debut‚ but fields flawlessly.
April 15Cubs SS Lou “second” Stringer makes 4 errors in his debut‚ a NL record for a player in his first game. Stringer does better on offense adding 2 hits and 2 RBIs and Chicago beats the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4 behind Claude Passeau and a clutch HR by Bill Nicholson. The win is the first for Jimmie Wilson‚ making his managerial debut.

The Cardinals top the defending champion Reds 7-3‚ benefiting from homers by Ernie Koy‚ Enos Slaughter‚ and John Mize.

Bob Feller walks 7 White Sox batters‚ hits 2‚ and allows 5 hits as Chicago edges Cleveland‚ 4-3. One of Feller’s walks forces in the winning run. A crowd of 46‚064 breaks the Municipal Stadium record for an opener.
April 19In the annual Patriot’s Day doubleheader in Boston‚ the Dodgers sting the Bees‚ winning 8-0 in each game. Luke Hamlin and Whit Wyatt apply the whitewashings.
April 20At Shibe Park‚ the Yankees bombard the A’s‚ 19-5‚ with Joe DiMaggio driving in 6 runs‚ 4 on a grand slam. Red Ruffing is down‚ 4-2‚ to Chubby Dean after 4 innings‚ but the New Yorkers notch 8 runs in the 5th. Joe Gordon has 2 home runs good for 5 RBIs.

At the Polo Grounds‚ the Giants draw 56‚314 to date the biggest crowd ever to view a single game. They get their money’s worth as the Dodgers shade the Giants‚ 10-9. Mel Ott has 2 of the 5 homers hit in the game. The Dodgers score the winning run in the 9th when Dolph Camilli scores from 2B after Babe Young‘s throw hits Kampouris‚ running from 1B‚ in the head. Reiser has 4 hits for Brooklyn and Hugh Casey wins in relief.

At the direction of Larry MacPhail‚ the Dodgers start to wear liners designed by Dr. Walter Dandy in their caps. This is in response to the numerous beanball wars of 1940 that hospitalized Joe Medwick‚ Billy Jurges‚ and others‚ and the cap will “save” Pete Reiser when he is beaned by the Phil’s Ike Pearson. In August‚ Dr. Dandy will apply for a patent on the cap but will turned down because the Patent Office has already granted one to MacPhail. An accommodation will be reached between the two granting Dandy the patent with royalties going to the Majors. The Dandy cap will get only occasional use until 1949‚ when it is discarded.

A syndicate of 12 Bostonians buys 73 percent of the Braves‚ formerly the Bees‚ for $350‚000 from the Charles F. Adams estate.
April 2133-year-old vet Wes Ferrell beats the Phillies‚ 8-1‚ in a complete game win for the Braves. He also has an RBI single‚ but it is his last ML win. He’ll be released May 8‚ but end up managing in the minors and winning two batting titles (the Virginia L in 1942‚ when his 31 HRs will lead the league: the Western Carolina L in 1948). His lifetime minor league average will end up at .349.
April 23With Ted Williams on the bench‚ having reinjured his ankle yesterday‚ the Red Sox fall to the Yankees‚ 4-2‚ in 11 innings. Joe DiMaggio is hitless‚ but Phil Rizzuto provides the offense by hitting his first ML homer‚ a 2-run shot off Charlie Wagner in the 11th‚ to win the contest.

Phillies sidearmer Ike Pearson beans Brooklyn’s Pete Reiser on the cheek. Pearson lasts 7 innings in losing‚ 4-0‚ to Whit Wyatt.

In a PCL game‚ Hollywood’s Babe Herman pinch hits in the 9th with 2 out and hits a grand slam to beat Los Angeles‚ 10-6. It’s the Babe’s 2nd PH homer this year.

Hank Greenberg‚ baseball’s highest paid star‚ is ordered to report to his draft board on May 7th.
April 26The Chicago Cubs are the first team to install an organ within a ballpark. With Roy Nelson at the keyboard‚ the Cubs hit sour notes‚ losing 6-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals‘ Max Lanier. Nelson has to stop playing at 2:30 when the radio pregame shows began. Rules at the time forbade songs from the ASCAP song publishing service from being played over the radio–even in the background–without compensation.
April 29At their stockholders meeting‚ the new owners of the Boston Nationals abandon the Bees nickname in favor of the Braves. Bob Quinn‚ retained as president‚ instituted the name change in January‚ 1936‚ by appealing the public for suggestions.
April 30The Dodgers‚ down 3-0‚ score 4‚ including a run in the 9th to beat Vander Meer and the Reds. For the Dodgers‚ it is their 9th straight win‚ but they drop to 2nd place behind the Cards.

May 1Reds P Bucky Walters stops the Dodgers‚ 2-1 in 11 innings. The Dodgers load the bases in the 11th‚ but Durocher and Babe Phelps strike out to end the game. Curt Davis takes the loss.

Cecil Travis raises his average to .571 with a homer and 2 doubles to pace the Senators to a 7-0 win over the White Sox. Dutch Leonard twirls the shutout.
May 3Hank Gornicki of the St. Louis Cardinals pitches a one-hitter in his big-league debut‚ beating the Philadelphia Phillies 6-0. Stan Benjamin‘s single is the lone hit. It is the Cards’ 8th straight win.
May 4The Indians win their 10th in a row‚ 12-4‚ over Washington. Al Smith is the winner.

In St. Louis‚ Lefty Grove wins his 294th victory‚ 11-4‚ over the Browns. The Red Sox back Lefty with 15 hits.
May 5Bobo Newsom and the Tigers trounce the Yankees 10-1 in Detroit. Joe DiMaggio is held hitless and has gone 7-for-43 in his last 12 games.
May 6The Dodgers snag veteran 2B Billy Herman from the Cubs for OF Charlie Gilbert‚ IF Johnny Hudson‚ and $65‚000. Herman‚ the premier 2B in the league‚ is hitting just .194‚ but will replace the journeyman Pete Coscarart. In his first game as a Dodger‚ Herman is 4-for-4 to lead Brooklyn to a 7-3 win over visiting Pittsburgh.

The newly renamed Braves beat the Cards‚ 5-4‚ to snap the Redbirds 10-game win streak (12 on the road). All the runs come in the 5th and are unearned. It’s the Cards first loss away from St. Louis since losing in spring training March 29th. Since then they’d won 25 straight-exhibition and regular-away from home.

Playing in his last game before induction into the Army tomorrow‚ Hank Greenberg hits 2 HRs to lead Detroit to a 7-4 win over the Yankees. Each time he teams with Bruce Campbell to go back-to-back‚ the 2nd time in his career he’s done it. Rudy York and he teamed up. A few days later OF Joe Gallagher of the Dodgers is drafted. No other regular ML player will be drafted during the season‚ but several others on training rosters will‚ as contemporary writers phrase it‚ “join the colors.”
May 7At Philadelphia‚ Cubs pitcher Bill Lee cracks a pair of homers while pitching Chicago to an 11-2 win over the Phils. Bill Crouch takes the loss.

At the Polo Grounds‚ Reds SS Eddie Joost accepts a record 19 chances as Cincinnati edges New York‚ 1-0. In addition to his 10 assists and 9 putouts‚ Joost has a throwing error and the game’s only stolen base. Ernie Lombardi‘s homer accounts for the only run as Bucky Walters is the winner over Prince Hal Schumacher in a battle of veterans. Both pitchers keep the ball down and each outfield accounts for a single flyout‚ tying the ML mark for fewest chances by 2 teams.

The Pirates send veteran Lloyd Waner to the Braves‚ where he will be reunited with his brother‚ in exchange for P Nick Strincevich. Waner will play just a month in Boston before being swapped to the Reds for John Hutchings. Waner will play 77 games for 3 teams this year and not strike out.
May 12Love that home cooking. At Boston‚ its Lefty against Lefty as Grove stops the Yankees Gomez‚ 6-4 for the southpaw’s 20th straight win at Fenway Park. It is his 295th career victory. Jimmie Foxx helps with a 2-run homer.
May 14Browns hurlers walk 19 Athletics. Starter Bob Harris issues 8 of the passes‚ but the Browns win anyway 10-5.

The Cubs finally give up on Dizzy Dean. Diz gets his release the same day that brother Paul is sent to the minors by the Giants. Diz will sign on as a coach.

The Giants sell Ernie Koy to the Reds and send P Harry Gumbert to the Cardinals for P “Fiddler Bill” McGee. Gumbert will go 11-5 for the Cards in 1941 and pitch another 10 years.
May 15Joe DiMaggio gets a single in 4 at bats against Ed Smith of the Chicago White Sox to start his 56-game hitting streak. Joe D’s hit goes unnoticed as the Yankees lose‚ 13-1. Taffy Wright homers and drives in 4 White Sox runs‚ the 8th straight game he’s driven in a run.

A single by Jimmie Bloodworth in the 7th is the only hit for the Senators as they lose to the Browns Denny Galehouse‚ 7-0.

Rip Radcliff‚ one of the top AL batters in 1940 for the Browns‚ is waived to the Tigers as a result of a sudden batting decline.

The Browns trade P Vern Kennedy to the Senators for vet Rick Ferrell. The Senators release vet P Danny MacFayden.
May 16The Yankees bench Phil Rizzuto and Jerry Priddy‚ putting back Gordon and Crosetti. New York then rally in the 9th to beat the White Sox‚ 5-4.
May 17The city of Philadelphia and the state of Pennsylvania declare a legal holiday to honor the A’s manager on Connie Mack Day at Shibe Park. Connie declines to agree to a name change for Shibe Park to Connie Mack Stadium. George M. Cohan sings a new baseball song and then the Tigers put a damper on the day’s festivities with a 6-5 come-from-behind win. Frank Croucher has three hits‚ including a triple‚ for Detroit.

The Phils Johnny Podgajny outduels the Reds Bucky Walters to win‚ 2-1.

Myril Hoag‘s clutch hitting paces the White Sox to a 3-2 win over the Yankees‚ as Chicago wins the rubber game in the 3-game series.
May 18The Cards rally to beat the Phils‚ 6-5‚ but they lose rookie C Walker Cooper who fractures a scapula bone and dislocates a collar bone. Cooper is bowled over by Harry Marnie‚ who scores in the 5th.
May 19Cubs pitcher Claude Passeau hits a grand slam off Hugh Casey as the Cubs score 9 runs in the 2nd inning. Chicago coast to a 14-1 win at home. Brooklyn manager Durocher protests the game claiming the Cubs are over the 25-man limit‚ but the protest is tossed out. The Cubs will be fined $500 for the infraction. Brooklyn also protests that the mound is several inches over the 15 inch height allowed: at the suggestion of the umps‚ Casey pitches from several inches in front of the rubber‚ but it doesn’t help.
May 20OF Taft Wright of the Chicago White Sox doubles to drive in a run and sets an AL record by driving in at least one run in 13 consecutive games. Wright has 22 RBI in the streak‚ although in 6 of the games he knocked in a run without a hit.

With the Phils down 4-0‚ the Phils George Jumonville hits a pinch homer‚ his only HR in the majors‚ and the Phils come back to top the Cards in 11 innings‚ 6-4. It is Jumonville’s last ML at bat.

At Crosley Field‚ the Reds score 6 runs in the 9th to defeat the Braves‚ 9-6. Frank McCormick finishes the scoring with a 3-run homer.
May 22A smart play by the Reds Lonny Frey helps Cincy to a 6-4 win over the Giants. With one out and the sacks full in the 1st‚ Chuck Aleno hits a DP grounder to short. Frey‚ running from 2B‚ allows the ball to hit him for an out‚ stopping play and putting Aleno on 1B. Ernie Lombardi then hits a grand slam. Frank McCormick adds a 2-run HR in the 3rd.
May 24Selma Cloverleaf (Southeastern L) pitcher Hal Toenes relieves in the top of the ninth inning against the Jackson Mississipians with a runner on 1B and 2 out (as noted by historian Bill Hickman). Without throwing a pitch‚ he picks the runner off 1B. Selma‚ 4 runs down‚ scores 6 runs to give Toenes the pitchless win.
May 25Ted Williams raises his batting average over .400 for the first time during the season. His run to be the first since Bill Terry in 1930 to exceed the magic number will be marked in newspapers throughout the season‚ although it will often give way to the batting streak by Joe DiMaggio. DiMag singles today‚ off Boston’s Lefty Grove. Grove thus joins two of baseball’s most famous streaks-Joe’s current hitting streak and Ruth’s 60 homers in 1927. Lefty served up a gopher on September 27‚ 1927.

Pete Reiser hits his only career grand slam to pace the Dodgers to an 8-4 win over the Phils. Reiser’s HR comes off Ike Pearson‚ who had beaned him just a month earlier.
May 27At the Polo Grounds the score 1-1 between the Giants and Braves when umpire Jocko Conlan calls time in the 7th. The crowd and the two teams then listens for 45 minutes while President Roosevelt’s radio message about the war in Europe is heard on the loudspeakers. When play resumes‚ the Braves lift Jim Tobin for Manny Salvo‚ while the Giants take out starter Hal Schumacher‚ replacing him with Carl Hubbell. Hubbell’s single wins it for New York‚ 2-1.

Joe DiMaggio is 4-for-5 with three runs and three ribbies to pace the Yankees to a 10-8 win over the Senators.
May 28The New York Yankees edge the Washington Senators‚ 6-5‚ before 25‚000 in the first night game at Griffith Stadium. George Selkirk twinkles with a pinch grand slam‚ and DiMaggio triples against Sid Hudson.
May 29The Cards nip the Reds 10-9 for their 10th straight win. The last five are one run victories. The Reds almost pull the game out‚ scoring 3 in the 9th‚ but Marty Marion snags a Ernie Lombardi line drive and doubles up Ernie Koy at 2B.

Ted Williams is 3-for-5 and scores a pair in the Red Sox 6-4 win over the A’s. Ted will score 2 or more runs for the next 7 games giving him 8 in a row.

Despite scoring 5 runs in the top of the 6th‚ the Yanks and Senators tie 2-2 in a game called after 5 innings. DiMaggio has a hit and a strikeout‚ just his 3rd this year.
May 30With Brooklyn 3 games in back of the Cards‚ 59‚487 jam the Polo Grounds to watch the Dodgers and Giants. Whitlow Wyatt shuts a out the Giants to win the opener‚ and Brooklyn overcomes a 2-1 deficit in the nitecap to score 5 runs in the 9th and win 6-2.

The Red Sox and Yanks split‚ New York winning the opener and Boston trouncing New York in the nitecap‚ 13-0. The Sox cap it off with a triple steal. Williams laces 6 hits in the doubleheader‚ while Joe DiMaggio hits in both games to run his streak to 16. It is not a good day for the DiMag‚ suffering from a cold‚ as he commits an error in the opener and 3 more in the nitecap.

The Cards run their win streak to 11 in a row by defeating the Reds‚ 4-1‚ in the opener. The Reds win game 2 by a 3-2 score.

June

June 1After losing 6 straight games in mid-May‚ the Dodgers begin to show the results of the trades by Larry MacPhail and Leo Durocher. They win their 9th-straight game‚ beating the ailing Cards‚ 2-1‚ and are now tied first place. Kirby Higbe is a winner over Lanier. Suffering Red Birds include Mize‚ out with a broken finger for 30 games‚ and Walker Cooper‚ suffering from a broken shoulder blade‚ who will be out two months.

Mel Ott’s 2-run homer‚ the 400th of his career and his 1‚500th RBI‚ gives the Giants a 3-2 win over the Reds.
June 2New York Yankees 1B Lou Gehrig dies of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at age 37 in New York. Gehrig died at his home in the Bronx. From that time on‚ the illness is known primarily as Lou Gehrig‘s Disease.

In Cleveland‚ the Indians defeat the Yankees‚ 7-5‚ behind Bob Feller. Feller had been unscored upon in 31 innings before New York got to him. DiMaggio has a single and double‚ improving his consecutive hit streak to 19 games‚ and also robs Ken Keltner of an extra base hit with a running catch in center.

The Cards move back into sole possession of first with a 5-4 victory over Brooklyn. Johnny Hopp triples‚ then scores the winner in the 9th.

The Senators beat Bill Dietrich, 8-3, to drop the White Sox from first place. Buddy Lewis records two hits to reach the 1,000 level at age 24. However, he’ll barely make 1500 hits because of three and a half years lost to military service.
June 3The Phils top the Cubs 7-0 on a one-hitter by P Tommy Hughes. Lou Novikoff‘s single to lead off the 8th is the only hit.

Brooklyn tops the Cards 6-0 as Whitlow Wyatt tosses another shutout‚ beating Mort Cooper. Reiser homers in the 1st‚ and Dolf Camilli adds another roundtripper in the 4th.
June 6The Giants use plastic batting helmets for the first time against the Pirates but lose a doubleheader to the Bucs 5-4 and 4-3. In game 2‚ Pittsburgh P Rip Sewell sets an NL record by handling 11 assists.

Danny Litwhiler‘s 2nd inning infield single is the only hit given up by Johnny Vander Meer as the beats the Phils‚ 7-0. The Reds SS has both hands on Litwhiler’s grounder but fumbles it and it is ruled a hit.
June 7The Yankees scores 5 in the 9th to beat host St. Louis 11-7. DiMaggio has 3 hits and King Kong Keller belts a grand slam to back reliever Charley Stanceau.

The Cards regain the NL lead by pounding out 19 hits and beating the Giants‚ 11-3. Jimmy Brown‚ Coaker Triplett‚ and Terry Moore each collect four hits.
June 8Yankee C Bill Dickey pulls off the only unassisted DP of his career in the first of two with the Browns. Dickey catches Bob Swift‘s pop foul along the first base line and tags first to double off the straying runner‚ Johnny Berardino. The Yanks sweep the Browns‚ 9-3 and 8-3. DiMaggio collects 7 RBIs on the afternoon‚ with 2 homers in the opener and 2 hits in the nitecap. He has now hit in 24 straight. From today’s 2nd game to July 26th‚ Joe will jolt 11 homers without striking out.

At Chicago‚ Red Sox veteran Lefty Grove (4-1) goes 10 innings topping the Pale Hose‚ 4-1. It is Lefty’s 297th win.
June 9At Crosley Field‚ the Reds spot the Dodgers 4 runs after 7 innings‚ then win 9-7 on Lonnie Frey’s game tying 2-run homer and game winning 2-run double.
June 10Cardinal starter Lon Warneke yields a single to Phils lead off hitter Emmett Mueller‚ then gives up no more safeties as he wins‚ 3-0. It’s the 2nd one-hitter against the Phils in 4 days.
June 12Babe Phelps‚ who skipped spring training‚ misses the Dodger train to St. Louis and returns to New York claiming he’s “ill.” A furious Durocher declares he’s “through” with the hypochondriac catcher‚ fines him $500 and puts Herman Franks behind the plate for the Cards’ series. Phelps returns to Maryland and will not play the rest of the season.

A month after joining the two Waner brothers together‚ the Braves ship Lloyd (.412) to the Reds for pitcher Johnny Hutchings. The Waners will team up together on the Dodgers in 1944.
June 13Dodger ace Whitlow Wyatt continues his mastery of the Cards‚ winning 1-0 in the series opener.
June 14Brooklyn takes the 2nd game against the Cards‚ scoring 7 runs in the 6th to win 12-5.
June 15In St. Louis‚ Brooklyn and the Cards split‚ with the Dodgers winning the 1st game 8-1‚ and St. Louis taking the 2nd game 3-0. Pete Reiser is hit twice by pitches during the doubleheader.
June 17Joe DiMaggio is credited with a hit in his 30th consecutive game when an easy grounder to short bounces up and hits Luke Appling on the shoulder. Chicago beats the Yankees 8-7.
June 18The Giants play an 11-inning tie in Pittsburgh because of a regulation that states that no inning can be started after 11:50 P.M. The game is held up in the 4th inning so that the fans can listen to a broadcast of the title fight between local favorite Billy Conn and Joe Louis.

Mize’s home run production had fallen from 43 to 16 in 1941‚ but he will adjust to the Polo Grounds and lead the National League in 1947-48. Yesterday Rickey sold C/OF Don Padgett to Brooklyn for $30‚000. Padgett will enter the Navy without playing a game for the Dodgers‚ and Brooklyn will try unsuccessfully to get their money back from the Cards.
